From Salisbury turning off the A46 signposted Nomansland, Green Hill Farm is located on the new road, the Satnav leaves you short of the site however continue a short way down the road and you will see a signpost to turn off left. The final approach is down a long drive, parking for new arrivals is provided on the right-hand side a bit demanding on the suspension but provides space for 2/3 caravans. This prevents caravans from blocking the access while booking in. Check-in is available after 12am, with a late check-in until 22:00 hours by prior appointment. Site staff are normally on hand to greet you, provide a map so that you can easily locate your pitch. A deposit of £10 is required for the barrier card, which is refundable on departure.
The site is divided into 2 sections, a family caravan and camping area together with an adult’s only area which is protected by a second barrier, as we had been allocated a pitch in the adult’s area we approached the second barrier to find the card did not work. A quick call to the office and a member of staff arrived promptly with a second card. However, while we waited we were blocking the access to one of the fields so anyone wanting to get in our out was out of luck as reversing is not an option.
While the second card worked and we finally arrived at our location, it was not to be the last time we experienced a card issue and had to return twice more during our stay to the office in order to gain access or leave the site due to incorrect programming of the card.
However waking up to the sound of bird song, with families of ducks and geese surrounding your caravan is a really pleasant way to start the day and card issues aside, Green Hill Farm has excellent facilities, underfloor heated shower blocks, good water pressure and cleaned regularly. The site has an abundance of wildlife including the odd deer wandering past the caravan it really makes for a pleasant stay and worth a return visit.
A good range of activity is provided for children, including children’s play area, outdoor gymnasium, football pitch, table tennis, mini golf, basketball hoop and games rooms with Pool, Air hocky, and Table football on offer.
Green Hill Farm has a small shop at reception, a licensed bar in the family section, and luxury camping pods available for hire. Pitches are a mixture of hard standing and grass with 20A hook-up, together with the normal facilities, you would expect to make this a good quality site. The site has 2 lakes where fishing from your pitch is possible, a separate charge is applicable and fishing licence is required.
We found the site to be very peaceful midweek, however, it does get busier at weekends, with the fishing seeming to be a major attraction. Located at the northern edge of the New Forest it is a wonderful place to base yourself for local attractions, Lyndhurst, Lymington, Poole, and even the historic dockyard at Portsmouth is within an easy drive and well worth a visit to see a large number of attractions including the Warrior, Victory and the new Mary Rose exhibition. (During June 2017 a family ticket 2 Adults and 3 children can be purchased for £60 (online) and gives you access to all attractions for a period of 12 months). In addition, the Gunwharf Quays shopping centre (90 designer outlet stores & restaurants) are a short walk from the dockyard, so you can return on more than one occasion and keep both the wife and children happy.
